 Dinosaurs
Tips and ideas
for an earth moving Dinosaurs Birthday Party.
Games/Activities
-
Dinosaur Egg Hunt-On your child's special
day, create a special dinosaur egg hunt in their
honor. Use your own special surprises to represent
"dinosaur eggs," or use the following directions.
To make "dino eggs," cook at least one hard-boiled
egg for each guest. After the eggs have cooled,
crack the shells lightly with the back of a spoon
to give them a prehistoric look. Then, place the
eggs in dye for several seconds. This will make
the eggs look like very old, cracked dinosaur
eggs. Hide the "dino eggs" and other theme-related
prizes in easy or hard-to-find places, based on
the ages of the guests.
-
Cave Painting-Create your own prehistoric
cave mural! Hang a wide roll of off-white or brown
butcher paper on a wall, or spread it on a smooth
floor surface. Provide paints, markers, crayons,
stamps, etc. for your cave kids to use while
creating their cave paintings. Lay out books and
magazines with dinosaur pictures to give your
guests extra ideas. Hang the mural up when the
kids are finished to add special decoration to
your Dinosaur party. This is a good activity for
the beginning of the party to break the ice, and
to provide the children with something to do until
everyone arrives.
-
Catch the Dinosaur’s Tail-Direct
everyone to form a single-file line, and hold onto
the waist of the person in front of them. The
first person in line is the head of the dinosaur,
and the last person is the tail. When the game
begins, the head tries to catch the tail. If the
head successfully catches the tail, he or she
stays at the back of the line and become the new
tail. The chase continues!
-
Jungle Vines-This game will put your
guests to the test by challenging both their skill
and intelligence. Begin by having the children
stand in a circle, facing inward. Have everyone
extend their right hand into the ring and take
hold of someone else’s hand. Then, have them do
the same with their left hand. The object of the
game is to untangle the “Jungle Vines” by stepping
over, ducking under, turning around, or doing
whatever it takes. Remind the kids not to let go
of hands until they have successfully untangled
the vines!
-
Archaeological Dig-Get your dinosaur
lovers in on the action with this adventurous
activity. Several weeks before the party, ask your
local butcher or meat market for discarded bones.
Clean them, let them dry and then paint them
white. (Colored bones are also fun too!) Before
the party, bury the bones in your child's sand box
in various places. Provide shovels to dig the
'dinosaur bones' up and brushes to clean the dirt
and sand off them. Be sure to bury enough bones so
that each child has the opportunity to excavate at
least one.
Yummy
Treats
-
Jungle Juice-It may be green but it still
tastes great! Pour lemon-lime soda into a large
punch bowl. Just before serving it, add scoops of
lime sherbet and watch the punch bubble as it
turns into green jungle juice.
-
Banana Splits-Who
says dinosaurs don’t eat bananas? You’ll need at
least half a banana for each guest, a half gallon
each of vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry ice
cream, plenty of chocolate sauce, whipped cream,
chopped nuts, and a jar of maraschino cherries.
First, lay a banana (sliced lengthwise) in a dish
and cover with one small scoop of each flavor of
ice cream. Top with whipped cream, drizzle with
chocolate sauce, and sprinkle with chopped nuts
(make sure guests can eat nuts). Add a cherry on
top for the final touch!
-
Prehistoric Fruit Punch-Your little
dinosaurs are sure to love this delicious drink!
You will need one 10 oz. package frozen
raspberries and one 10 oz. package frozen
strawberries (both partially thawed), one 12 oz.
can frozen lime juice concentrate, 32 oz. ginger
ale (chilled), one 32 oz. bottle of club soda
(chilled), and one pint vanilla ice cream. Puree
berries in a blender and combine with the lime
juice concentrate. Refrigerate until party time.
When ready to serve, pour mixture into a punch
bowl and the add ginger ale, club soda, and scoops
of ice cream.
-
Jurassic Cookie-For this recipe, prepare
the dough for your child’s favorite cookie recipe
(or purchase pre-made dough). Coat a baking sheet
with cooking spray and place the entire batch of
cookie dough on the sheet. Shape the dough into an
oval (dinosaur egg), or any shape you wish. Spread
the dough about a 1/2 inch thick and bake for 5-10
minutes longer than the recipe suggests. Check the
cookie periodically to prevent overcooking. If the
edges are crisp before the center is done, protect
the edges with foil. Display this Jurassic treat
for everyone to see. Break off pieces for your
guests to enjoy!
Decorating
Tips
Spread your
table cover on your party table. If your child has
any theme-related toys, you can add them to the
table for a more festive display.
Cut several
one-to-two-foot-long pieces of curling ribbon. Curl
the ribbon by pulling it between your thumb and the
blade of your scissors. Lay the resulting curls on
your table for added color. Hang balloons in bunches
for the best effect. If you choose to fill balloons
with helium, wait until the party day to ensure they
float well!
Use balloons to mark
the party spot; hang them on the mailbox, near the
front door, or tie them to the birthday child's
chair to mark the seat of honor.
Place balloons
anywhere that strikes your fancy. The more the
better!
Gather six or eight
streamers and attach them to the ceiling in the
center of the party room (or over the table). Use a
light fixture over the table, if you have one, as
the center point for the streamers.
To
create colorful two-tone streamers, put two
differently colored streamers back-to-back, twist as
you walk them to the wall, and attach at shoulder
height.
